Michael Bernstein is an experimental psychologist. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Imaging at the Warren Alpert Medical School and a Research Scientist at Rhode Island Hospital. His research is focused on the overlap of cognitive science and medicine. Dr. Bernstein’s NIDA K-01 award examines whether the long-established analgesic (pain relieving) properties of placebos can be used to minimize opioid use among acute pain patients. He is serving as co-editor of a forthcoming book (publisher: Mayo Clinic Press) on the nocebo effect, which broadly refers to placebo effects that hurt rather than help patients.
